AP Psychology: make sense of research methods
Read AP Psychology research examples with a clear routine: identify the question, design, variables, sample and limits of the conclusion.
How do I analyze a psychology study?
Identify the research question and what the study actually measured. Determine whether the researchers manipulated a variable or observed an association. Then inspect the sample, the comparison and the limits of the conclusion. Apply terms to the particular study rather than listing definitions.
Distinguish a relationship from a causal explanation
Two measured variables can move together without one being shown to cause the other. Ask whether an alternative factor or the direction of the relationship could explain the pattern. Experimental manipulation and appropriate controls can strengthen a causal argument, but you still need to examine how the study was carried out.
Read the operational definition
A concept such as memory or stress can be measured in different ways. Look for exactly what participants did or what the researchers recorded. Explain how that measurement represents the concept and what it might miss. Changing the measurement can change the claim a study is able to support.
Sampling and assignment answer different questions
How people enter a sample matters for the population to which findings may apply. How participants are placed into conditions matters for comparisons within an experiment. Keep those decisions separate when reading a research description. Do not assume a large sample automatically removes bias.
Check ethics and generalization
Consider how participants are treated, what information they receive and how privacy is protected. Then ask which people and situations the evidence represents. A classroom research example is not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation. Use careful language about what a result suggests and where uncertainty remains.
Practice applying, not just recognizing
Take a short research description and explain its variables, design and main limitation in your own words. Compare your reasoning with the feedback. On a later day, use a different example so you have to identify the structure again. Return to the official course information and your teacher’s guidance when choosing practice material.
